Charitable foundations play a societal role in the 21st century and set ambitious goals for their impact. In the prosecution of their goals, they encounter the challenges of their organizational structures and have to deal with the complexity of a globalized world. Approaches from organizational and social theory are particularly suitable for the scientific analysis of these institutions. The authors take up this dual perspective and systematically place foundations and their structures in a sociological context – findings that are also extremely relevant for practitioners in the foundation sector.
